Hue Histories

We divided the visible spectrum among eight students and each researched a hue – red/pink; orange/brown; yellow; green; blue, indigo/cyan; violet/purple/magenta; black/gray; and white. Via verbal presentations with lush visuals, we explored aspects of geology, biology, physics, culture and emotion, among other topics.

This diversity research led to many surprising results. For example, charcoal can be used to clean teeth (picture below); sea snails produced the most expensive dye; Inuit people have more than a dozen ways to call white according to the condition of snow. From the ancient world to popular culture, people perceive color in quite different ways. Historically in Asia, white is a funereal color but now it is globally used in Minimalist design.
